Getting picked is a different job.","content_html":"
Since March 2026, Shopify Agentic Storefronts has put your product catalogue into the AI shopping surfaces where buyers now ask what to buy. For eligible stores selling to United States buyers, it is already on by default. That gets your products into the room. It does not decide which product the assistant names when a shopper asks for one.
\n\n
Those are two different jobs. The first is being available and accurate inside an AI answer. The second is being the brand the assistant recommends instead of the competitors beside you. Shopify's new tools do the first well. They leave the second to you.
\n
The short version
\n
\n
Shopify Agentic Storefronts puts your catalogue into AI shopping surfaces. It does not decide which product the assistant names.
\n
AirOps analysed 21,311 brand mentions across ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity in October 2025 and found 85% came from third-party pages and 13.2% from a brand's own domain.
\n
Agentic Storefronts can reach the data you own. It cannot place you in the round-ups, reviews and forum threads that carry the other 85%.
\n
Getting into the AI shopping surface and getting named by the assistant are two different jobs.
\n
CitoRank measures whether ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini name you or a competitor, and ranks what to change on-page and off-site.
\n
\n
What Shopify Agentic Storefronts actually does
\n
Shopify's set of tools has three named parts. Shopify Agentic Storefronts is the channel that feeds your catalogue into AI shopping surfaces so a buyer can find and complete a purchase inside the conversation. Shopify Catalog is the data layer underneath it: it structures your product titles, options, price and stock so an assistant can read them without guessing. Catalog Mapping is the accuracy step for stores with custom data: it maps your metafields, metaobjects and tag conventions onto the structured attributes the surfaces expect.
\n
Read plainly, this is a supply problem solved well. The surfaces it feeds are ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode and the Gemini app. Shopify turned it on by default for eligible stores selling to United States buyers in March 2026, and its merchant materials say Europe is next. Shopify also reported that AI-driven traffic to its stores grew eightfold and AI-search orders fifteenfold year on year, and that 5.6 million stores became discoverable in AI surfaces.
\n
Shopify frames the goal as accuracy: if a shopper found your products in an AI chat today, would the price, stock and details be right? Correct representation is worth having. It is also the floor, not the ceiling. Being represented correctly is what gets you considered. It is not what gets you chosen.
\n
Does being in the AI answer mean you get recommended?
\n
No. In Shopify's own example of the feature, a shopper asks an assistant for a hat under a set budget. The assistant replies, "Here are some popular options," and shows three: a classic cap, a snapback and a structured panel. Three products. One question. The assistant has already filtered.
\n
Agentic Storefronts can put your hat among those candidates. It cannot make yours the one the assistant leads with, or the one it describes in the most detail, or the one it returns when the shopper narrows the question. That selection runs on signals a product feed does not carry.
\n
This is the part most merchants miss. Getting into the AI shopping surface is a yes or no. Getting recommended within it is a ranking, and rankings have inputs. The question stops being "am I there" and becomes "when three of us are there, why does it name them."
\n
Where the other 85% of mentions come from
\n
Agentic Storefronts syndicates the data you own, which is the smaller share of where AI recommendations form. AirOps analysed 21,311 brand mentions across ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity in October 2025 and found 85% came from third-party pages and 13.2% from a brand's own domain. The recommendation forms on pages you do not own. Your own data verifies the details once you are already on the shortlist, the same split AirOps found across 21,311 brand mentions.
\n
Those third-party pages are the Wirecutter round-up the assistant quotes, the "best of" listicle it lifts its shortlist from, the Trustpilot review it reads back, and the subreddit thread it leans on. No product feed reaches them.
\n
We see the same split inside our cohort. Across 40 pre-launch stores over 30 days, CitoRank logged 1,847 AI citations, and ChatGPT named the same six third-party sources in roughly 70% of its product answers. Two of the six are subreddits. None is a merchant's own store. Which sources each model reaches for differs by engine, so a strong showing in one says little about the others, which we mapped in what ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini cite when shoppers ask what to buy.
\n
The two jobs, side by side:
\n
\n
\n
\n
The job
\n
Agentic Storefronts
\n
CitoRank
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
Get your catalogue into the AI shopping surface
\n
Yes: price, stock and variants, syndicated
\n
No, it does not syndicate
\n
\n
\n
Decide which product the assistant names
\n
No
\n
Tracks your rank per model, per query, over time
\n
\n
\n
Reach the 85% of mentions that come from third-party pages
\n
No: your own data is about 13%
\n
Measures them, and names the ones to land in
\n
\n
\n
Score the structured data on your live product page
\n
Structures data for syndication
\n
Scores Product, Offer, AggregateRating and FAQ on the live page
\n
\n
\n
Name the competitor taking the slot, and the source behind it
\n
No
\n
Yes, per query
\n
\n
\n
Rank the fixes by likely impact on your category
\n
No
\n
Yes
\n
\n
\n
\n
Two tools, two jobs. The 13% / 85% split is from AirOps, 21,311 mentions, October 2025.
\n
Two questions you still need answered: are you named, and how do you get named?
\n
Once you accept that being there is not being chosen, two questions follow. Neither is what Agentic Storefronts is for. Both are the job CitoRank was built for.
\n
Are you being picked?
\n
The first is measurement. CitoRank runs your category's buyer-intent queries against ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini, and records who got recommended for each one. You see your rank per model, per query: named first in Claude, fourth in ChatGPT, absent in Gemini. When a competitor takes the slot, you see which competitor, and on which pages the assistant found them.
\n
How do you get picked?
\n
Measurement is the hook. The ranked list of what to change is the product. The work runs in four steps:
\n
\n
Turn on Shopify Agentic Storefronts so your catalogue is in the answer at all. This step is Shopify's job, not ours.
\n
Fix your live product page. CitoRank scores the Product, Offer, AggregateRating, FAQ and Breadcrumb structured data on the page an assistant opens to verify what it is about to recommend. What an AI assistant can read on your product page covers what makes that text extractable.
\n
Earn the third-party sources. CitoRank names the round-up worth landing in, the kind of review buyers can be asked for, the subreddit thread that keeps getting cited, and the category video worth filming, since YouTube predicts AI visibility better than anything else measured. Placement matters: AirOps found 80% of cited brands appear among the first three named in the article the assistant quotes.
\n
Track your rank per model so you can see which change moved you.
\n
\n
That is the difference between a scoreboard and a coach. A scoreboard tells you that you are losing the slot. The work is the ranked list of what to publish, fix and pitch to try for it. CitoRank gives you both, for the same query, on the same day.
\n
Use both: Shopify to get into the answer, CitoRank to see if you're named
\n
None of this is an argument against Agentic Storefronts. Turn it on. Being available and accurate in an AI shopping surface is a real gain, and for some categories it is the difference between appearing and not appearing at all. It is the on-ramp, and the on-ramp matters.
\n
Then measure what it gets you. Shopify feeds ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode and the Gemini app. CitoRank asks ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini the buyer's question directly, so the rank you see is an outside reading, not Shopify's own report. It also reads Claude, which Agentic Storefronts does not feed at all. The on-store work that earns the citation runs on a fixed sequence: how AI assistants pick which Shopify store to recommend walks the four weeks.
\n
Shopify is now spending to convince every merchant that AI discovery decides the sale. On that, it and we agree. The instrument that tells you whether you are winning it, and the work to try for more, is the part you still bring yourself.
\n
CitoRank runs your category's queries against ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini, names every source behind every answer, and ranks the fixes. See how the audit runs or compare plans.
\n
CitoRank is an independent Shopify app built by Lincado Ltd. It is not affiliated with, sponsored by, or endorsed by Shopify. Shopify, Shopify Agentic Storefronts and Shopify Catalog are trademarks of Shopify Inc., used here for identification and comparison only.
\n
\n
FAQ
\n
Does Agentic Storefronts get my products recommended by ChatGPT?
\n
No, and it does not claim to. Agentic Storefronts syndicates your catalogue into AI shopping surfaces so your products are available and accurate inside an AI answer. That makes you a candidate. Which candidate the assistant names is a separate step, decided mostly on pages you do not own: AirOps analysed 21,311 brand mentions in October 2025 and found 85% formed on third-party sources. Being in the shopping surface gets you considered. It does not get you chosen.
\n
Is CitoRank an alternative to Shopify's AI tools?
\n
No, they do different jobs and stack. Shopify Catalog and Agentic Storefronts get your products into AI shopping surfaces accurately. CitoRank measures whether ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini then name you, against the competitors in the same answer, for the queries your buyers use, and ranks the fixes that change it. One is the on-ramp. The other is the scoreboard and the list of what to publish. Run both.
\n
Is Shopify Agentic Storefronts live yet?
\n
Yes, for some stores. Shopify turned Agentic Storefronts on by default for eligible stores selling to United States buyers in March 2026, after launching it in December 2025. The surfaces it feeds are ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode and the Gemini app. Purchasing currently runs for United States buyers, and Shopify's merchant materials say Europe is next. If you sell to US buyers, your catalogue may already be in those answers.
\n
How much of my AI visibility comes from my own product data?
\n
About 13%. AirOps analysed 21,311 brand mentions across ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity in October 2025: 13.2% were attributed to the brand's own domain, 85% to third-party pages, the rest uncited. The third-party share concentrates in listicles, comparison articles and reviews. A syndicated catalogue improves the 13%. The 85% lives in pages no product feed reaches, which is the half that decides most recommendations.
\n
Can CitoRank tell me whether Agentic Storefronts is working?
\n
Indirectly, yes, by measuring the outcome it is meant to produce. CitoRank asks ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini your category's buyer-intent queries the way a shopper would, and records whether you are named and where. If being on an AI shopping surface is turning into recommendations, your per-model rank reflects it. CitoRank does not read Shopify's channel directly. It watches the answers your buyers actually get.
\n
Does Shopify track my AI rank against competitors?
\n
Not in this announcement. Agentic Storefronts is a selling channel and Shopify Catalog is a data layer; the scorecard focuses on accuracy and AI sales attribution. None of those tells you whether ChatGPT names you or a competitor for "best [your category]". That competitive read, per model and per query, is a different tool's job, and the one CitoRank was built for.
\n
What does getting picked actually depend on?
\n
Two kinds of signal. On your store, the structured data an assistant reads: Product, Offer, AggregateRating and FAQ schema on the live page, so it can quote your price, stock and rating. Off your store, the pages it cites: the ranked round-up, the comparison article, the review text and the subreddit thread your buyers use. CitoRank scores both, then ranks the fixes by likely impact. Placement matters near the top: AirOps found 80% of cited brands appear among the first three named in the article quoted.
\n
Do I still need product-page schema if Shopify Catalog structures my data?
\n
Yes. Shopify Catalog structures your data for syndication. Your live product page schema is what an assistant reads when it verifies the details: price, stock, variants, rating. Those are two different reads. CitoRank scores the JSON-LD on the page a shopper's assistant actually loads, and flags the Product, Offer, AggregateRating or FAQ fields that are missing or broken. The accuracy work overlaps. The live-page check is the one tied to what gets quoted.
\n
\n
See whether ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini name you, or a competitor
\n
Same-day first audit. Backlinks sit at 0.218. Branded web mentions at 0.664. Nothing else Ahrefs measured comes close.
\n\n
A YouTube mention means your brand named on YouTube: in a video, a title, a description or a transcript. In Ahrefs' follow-up study, that one signal outperformed every other factor they measured, and it held across all three surfaces tested, with correlations between 0.712 and 0.740. Ahrefs' own caveat applies here too: correlation is not causation. But when one factor leads on every surface, you pay attention.
\n
The catch, and the reason this post exists, is that the YouTube effect is concentrated. On Google's AI surfaces it is the single heaviest source. On ChatGPT and Claude it rounds to zero. Where the line falls, with the numbers, and what a store should film:
\n
\n
\n
\n
What the data says
\n
Number
\n
Source
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
Correlation of YouTube mentions with AI visibility, the strongest factor measured
\n
0.737
\n
Ahrefs, 75,000 brands
\n
\n
\n
YouTube's citation lead over the next video platform (Vimeo, at 0.1%)
\n
200×
\n
BrightEdge
\n
\n
\n
Share of AI Overview citations held by YouTube, June 2026 (#1, ahead of Reddit at 19.6%)
\n
20.9%
\n
Ahrefs, 1.9M citations
\n
\n
\n
Google AI Overviews containing at least one YouTube citation
\n
29.5%
\n
BrightEdge
\n
\n
\n
Growth in YouTube's citation share on Google's AI surfaces since October 2025
\n
~3×
\n
Evertune
\n
\n
\n
YouTube videos among 109 sources cited in a 15-query chatbot audit
\n
0
\n
5W Public Relations
\n
\n
\n
\n
The six numbers this post is built on, each unpacked below.
\n
Why does YouTube predict AI visibility so strongly?
\n
Set the 0.737 against the hierarchy from the third-party sources post: branded web mentions correlate with AI Overview visibility at 0.664, Domain Rating at 0.326, backlinks at 0.218. YouTube mentions sit above all of them, on every surface Ahrefs tested.
\n
Correlation with AI visibility, 0 to 1.
\n
Source: Ahrefs' brand-visibility studies, 75,000 brands. YouTube mentions measured in the follow-up study across ChatGPT, AI Mode and AI Overviews; remaining factors from the AI Overviews study on the same dataset.
\n
The mechanism is unglamorous. A video carries a transcript, and a transcript is text: every spoken claim about a product becomes machine-readable evidence. Chapters give that text timestamped structure, the same job headings do on a page. And Google owns the platform, so Gemini and AI Overviews read it natively. A 10-minute comparison video is, to an engine, a ranked list with a voice. Ranked lists carry 63% of the citations across six engines in Evertune's 400-million-citation dataset, the finding the engine teardown covers in detail. The format Gemini trusts most moved platform.
\n
Where the citations land: Google's surfaces first
\n
In Ahrefs' June 2026 study of 1.9 million AI Overview citations, YouTube is the most-cited domain at 20.9%, ahead of Reddit at 19.6%. A year earlier the order was reversed: Profound's August 2024 to June 2025 window had Reddit on top at 21%, with YouTube behind it. Evertune's tracking dates the move: YouTube's citation share on Google's AI surfaces has roughly tripled since October 2025.
\n
BrightEdge's analysis adds the frequency view: 29.5% of the Google AI Overviews in its tracked query set contain at least one YouTube citation, making YouTube the #1 domain in that sample too. The dominance is not subtle at the platform level. The next video platform, Vimeo, takes 0.1% of citations; TikTok 0.1%; Dailymotion and Twitch zero. It reaches past shopping queries as well: a study reported by the Guardian in January 2026 found YouTube was the most-cited domain even for health queries in AI Overviews, at 20,621 citations of 465,823.
\n
Two qualifiers keep this honest. BrightEdge also logged a recent 32.8% decline in YouTube's AI Overview citation rate (still #1 after the drop). It is the same lesson September 2025 taught about Reddit: source weightings move without notice. And beyond Google: Grok cites YouTube for 15.1% of its citations in Ahrefs' 1.9-million-query analysis, and YouTube took 13.9% of Perplexity's top-10 source citations in Profound's index. The platform travels.
\n
Where YouTube does nothing for you
\n
ChatGPT is the hole in the story. Profound's tracking puts YouTube around 90th among ChatGPT's most-cited domains. BrightEdge measured ChatGPT's YouTube citations doubling week over week, from a base near zero. And when 5W Public Relations audited 15 buyer-intent queries across AI chatbots, the 109 cited sources did not include a single YouTube video, while ordinary search for the same queries surfaced more than 30.
\n
Claude is the same, for a structural reason: it retrieves through Brave Search, and in Weglot's 180-query test Claude produced zero YouTube citations while Gemini cited YouTube in 21.7% of responses. The split is the point. A product video is a Gemini, AI Overviews, Grok and Perplexity play. Your ChatGPT visibility runs through the merchant feed, ranked lists and review platforms instead, the channels covered in what ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini cite. Budget the filming day accordingly: it moves roughly half your AI surface, and the half it moves is the one Google's shoppers see.
\n
What to film for a store
\n
The formats that earn citations are the ones that behave like the sources engines already quote: comparisons, round-ups and direct answers to one buyer question. Not a brand advert. One filming session, run properly, produces both a YouTube asset and an on-site one:
\n
\n
Title the video as the buyer query. "Best 12V camping fridge for a van: 3 models tested", not "Introducing our summer range". The query is what the engine matches against.
\n
Put real numbers on camera. Price, capacity, battery runtime, weight, what it beats and where it loses. Specific spoken figures end up in the transcript, and the transcript is what gets read.
\n
Add chapters for every product and criterion. A chapter list is the video's heading structure: it gives Gemini a timestamped section to point into.
\n
Publish the transcript on your own site. A tidied transcript on your buying-guide or product page turns one session into two citable assets, one on YouTube's authority, one on a domain you own. The page-mechanics guide covers what makes that text extractable.
\n
Watch which engines pick it up. Re-run your tracked buyer queries over the following weeks. Expect Gemini and AI Overviews to move first; expect ChatGPT not to move at all.
\n
\n
CitoRank runs your tracked buyer queries against ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini and lists every source behind every answer. When a video starts feeding your category's answers, you see which engine picked it up, and when. See how the audit runs or compare plans.
\n
\n
FAQ
\n
Does YouTube help my store get recommended by ChatGPT?
\n
Barely. Profound's tracking puts YouTube around 90th among ChatGPT's most-cited domains, and a 5W audit of 15 buyer-intent queries found zero YouTube videos among 109 cited sources. BrightEdge logs ChatGPT's YouTube citations growing fast, but from a base near zero. For ChatGPT, the levers are the merchant product feed, ranked lists and review platforms. Film for Gemini, AI Overviews, Grok and Perplexity; fix your feed for ChatGPT.
\n
Why does Gemini cite YouTube so much?
\n
Google owns YouTube, so Gemini and AI Overviews read it natively: transcripts, chapters and engagement signals are all first-party data. In Weglot's 180-query test, Gemini cited YouTube in 21.7% of responses while Claude cited it zero times. By June 2026, YouTube held 20.9% of AI Overview citations in Ahrefs' 1.9-million-citation study, the #1 domain, ahead of Reddit. A transcript also turns every spoken product claim into text an engine can quote.
\n
Do I need a big channel before AI engines cite my videos?
\n
No public study ties subscriber count to citation likelihood, so be wary of anyone quoting a threshold. What the research does measure is mentions and extractable content: Ahrefs' 0.737 correlation counts brand mentions on YouTube, not channel size. BrightEdge's framing is blunter: a single video you don't control can shape what an engine says about your brand across thousands of queries. The corollary is that a single accurate video you do control can do the same.
\n
What kind of video gets cited for product queries?
\n
The same formats that win in text: comparisons, ranked round-ups and direct answers to one buyer question. Ranked lists carry 63% of citations across six engines in Evertune's 400-million-citation dataset, and a comparison video is a ranked list with a transcript. Title the video as the query a shopper would type, speak real figures (price, capacity, runtime), and add chapters so each product has its own timestamped section.
\n
Should I publish the video transcript on my own site?
\n
Yes. The transcript on YouTube feeds Google's surfaces. A tidied version on your buying guide or product page is extractable text on a domain you own, and every engine can reach it, including Claude, which almost never cites YouTube. One filming session, two citable assets. Keep the on-site version honest to the video and mark the page up with your product schema as usual.
\n
Does CitoRank show when a YouTube video is cited in my category?
\n
Yes. The dashboard lists every source behind every answer for each keyword you track, across ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini. A cited YouTube video appears like any other URL. You see which video is feeding your category's answers, yours or a reviewer's, and which engine started citing it in which week.
\n
\n
See which sources feed your category's AI answers
\n
Same-day first audit. They are never the page that wins the recommendation. This post is about the moment your page does matter: when the assistant opens it to verify what it is about to recommend.
\n\n
Most product pages fail that moment on mechanics, not marketing. The facts sit in a JavaScript widget no AI crawler executes, or in the bottom half of the page that 44.2% of citations never reach, or in a spec sheet shipped as a JPEG. The fixes are cheap, and the evidence says they pay: in Princeton's GEO study, modest content changes lifted visibility in generative-engine answers by up to 40%, with the largest gains going to sites ranked lower in classic search. For a small store, page mechanics are a levelling opportunity.
\n
A citation, as throughout this series, means the source an assistant names behind its answer. GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot download your script files; none of them run them. Anything your page draws in after load (a reviews widget, a tabbed spec panel, an app-injected size guide) does not exist for ChatGPT or Claude.
\n
The exception is Google. Googlebot renders JavaScript, and Google's AI surfaces ride its index, so a JS-dependent page is visible to Gemini and AI Overviews while staying invisible to everyone else. That is the same per-engine split the engine teardown found in citation sources, now operating at the rendering layer.
\n
For a standard Shopify store the default position is good: Liquid themes are server-rendered, so your catalogue ships as real HTML. The failure modes are the additions. Review apps that inject their content client-side put your social proof where only Google can see it. Headless builds without server rendering hide the whole catalogue. Bot-protection rules (a firewall app, a Cloudflare setting) can challenge AI user agents even when robots.txt welcomes them. And slow responses get dropped: the four-week sequence in the hub post starts with getting server response under 200ms for exactly this reason.
\n
The one-minute test: open view-source on your best-selling product page, or curl it. If the spec table and the reviews are not in that raw HTML, they are not in any ChatGPT or Claude answer.
\n
The first 30% decides what gets quoted
\n
Kevin Indig analysed 3 million ChatGPT responses and 30 million citations, isolating 18,012 verified citations to study where in a page the quoted material lives. The distribution is steep: 44.2% of citations come from the first 30% of the content. The middle 40% of the page supplies 31.1%. The final third supplies 24.7%, with a sharp drop near the footer.
\n
Share of citations by position in the page.
\n
Source: Kevin Indig, 18,012 verified ChatGPT citations, as reported by Search Engine Land, February 2026.
\n
The paragraph-level finding is the useful surprise: 53% of citations come from the middle of paragraphs, not the openers, and plain short sentences outperform dense prose. An assistant reads the way a skimming buyer does. It rewards pages that state facts early and plainly.
\n
On a product page, that means the first 100 words carry the load. What the product is, the three numbers that matter (capacity, runtime, weight, whatever your category trades in) and who it fits. "Crafted for adventurers who demand more" extracts to nothing. "40-litre compressor fridge, 45 W draw, runs 18 hours on a 100Ah leisure battery" hands the model three facts it can quote. The same logic kills the spec-sheet JPEG: an image of a table is invisible to a text crawler. Real table, real text.
\n
One scoping note from Evertune's data: the typical ChatGPT-cited page runs 941 words with four H2 sections and 15 external links. That is a buying guide, not a product listing. Don't inflate your product page to chase it. The product page's job is verification facts up top plus clean structured data; the citable long-form lives on your guides, comparisons and video transcripts.
\n
Schema won't earn the citation. Do it anyway
\n
The honest evidence first. Ahrefs tracked 1,885 pages that added JSON-LD between August 2025 and March 2026, matched them against 4,000 control pages, and measured citations across AI Overviews, AI Mode and ChatGPT. Adding schema produced no citation lift on any platform. Cyrus Shepard's synthesis of 54 studies scores structured data 5.6 out of 10 as a citation factor. Anyone selling schema as the way to get cited is selling against the data.
\n
Schema earns its place doing three other jobs. It feeds the shopping surfaces ChatGPT now attaches to 87% of product questions, which are built from product feeds and structured data rather than prose. It makes the page unambiguous when an assistant does read it: Product, Offer, AggregateRating, FAQ and Breadcrumb markup state your price, stock and rating in a form that can't be misread. And it keeps your entity consistent across every page that mentions you. Necessary plumbing; not a citation lever.
\n
The same limit applies to structured product data you hand to a shopping surface: clean, machine-readable fields decide whether you can be listed, not whether you get named. Shopify gets your products into AI, getting picked is a different job works through that distinction.
\n
This is also the part of the audit we automate. CitoRank scans your live product pages, scores the JSON-LD you have today, and flags exactly which of those fields are missing or broken, alongside the citation tracking. How the audit runs covers both halves.
\n
What Princeton measured: facts beat adjectives
\n
The Princeton GEO study (KDD 2024) tested content changes against generative engines and measured the visibility effect. Adding statistics, quotations and citations from credible sources lifted visibility by up to 40%. Keyword stuffing, the reflex two decades of SEO trained, did not help. And the authors showed the gains skew toward sites ranked lower in classic search: the AI answer layer rewards content quality over accumulated domain authority more than the blue links ever did.
\n
The merchant translation is one sentence: a sourced number beats an adjective, every time. "IP44-rated, 45 W measured draw, kept contents at 4°C for 18 hours in Outdoorsmagic's bench test" is a quotable claim with a named source. "Rugged, efficient and reliable" is filler the model skips. Write the product page the way this series quotes studies, and the assistants have something to work with.
\n
Rebuild one product page this week
\n
Pick the product your margin depends on and run the five steps:
\n
\n
Fetch the page the way a crawler does. View-source or curl. Confirm the specs and the reviews are in the raw HTML. If they aren't, that's the week's first fix.
\n
Rewrite the first 100 words answer-first. What it is, the three numbers that matter, who it fits. 44.2% of citations come from the first 30% of the page.
\n
Move the spec sheet into an HTML table. Delete the JPEG version, or keep it for humans and mirror it in text.
\n
Fix the JSON-LD and the feed. Product, Offer, AggregateRating, FAQ, Breadcrumb, every field populated, and the same data in your ChatGPT merchant feed.
\n
Add a visible updated date and dateModified. Then refresh prices, stock and FAQs quarterly so the page reads as current.
\n
\n
Then measure whether it moved anything. CitoRank runs your buyer-intent queries against ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini, scores your product pages' schema, and names every source behind every answer, so a page rebuild shows up as a rank change you can date. See how the audit runs or compare plans.
\n
\n
FAQ
\n
Do AI assistants run JavaScript when they read my store?
\n
No. Vercel's analysis, covering more than 500 million GPTBot fetches, found none of the major AI crawlers execute JavaScript: GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot download script files but never run them. Googlebot is the exception, so Gemini and AI Overviews can see JS-rendered content while ChatGPT and Claude cannot. The only version of your page every engine sees is the server-rendered HTML.
\n
Does Shopify block AI crawlers by default?
\n
No. A standard Shopify robots.txt allows them, and Liquid themes ship server-rendered HTML, which is the right default. The risks come from additions: a customised robots.txt.liquid, a bot-protection or firewall app, or Cloudflare rules that challenge unfamiliar user agents. Check two things: your live robots.txt for GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, Claude-SearchBot and PerplexityBot, and your firewall logs for blocked requests from those agents.
\n
Does adding Product schema get me cited by ChatGPT?
\n
On the evidence, no. Ahrefs tracked 1,885 pages that added JSON-LD against 4,000 control pages and measured no citation lift on AI Overviews, AI Mode or ChatGPT. What schema does do: it feeds the shopping surfaces ChatGPT attaches to 87% of product questions, it states your price, stock and rating unambiguously when a page is read, and it keeps your brand entity consistent. Plumbing, not a citation lever, and still worth doing properly.
\n
How long should a product page be for AI search?
\n
Length is the wrong target. Evertune's typical ChatGPT-cited page runs 941 words with four H2s and 15 external links, but those pages are buying guides and round-ups, not product listings. Your product page needs the verification facts in its first 100 words and clean structured data below; padding it to 941 words helps nobody. Put the long-form on a buying guide or comparison page, where the citation gets earned.
\n
Where on the page should the important facts go?
\n
Early, and mid-paragraph. In Kevin Indig's analysis of 18,012 verified ChatGPT citations, 44.2% came from the first 30% of the content and citation rates dropped sharply near the footer. At paragraph level, 53% of citations came from the middle of paragraphs, and short plain sentences outperformed dense prose. Lead the page with the facts, keep sentences short, and don't bury the one number that wins the comparison in the last section.
\n
What did the Princeton GEO study find works?
\n
Adding statistics, quotations and citations from credible sources lifted visibility in generative-engine answers by up to 40%. Keyword stuffing did not help. The study (Aggarwal et al., KDD 2024) also showed the gains concentrate in sites ranked lower in traditional search, which makes the AI answer layer one of the few places a small store can outperform a bigger competitor's domain authority with better-evidenced content.
\n
Does CitoRank check my product schema?
\n
Yes. The audit scans your live product pages, scores the JSON-LD you have today, and tells you which fields are missing or broken across Product, Offer, AggregateRating, FAQ and Breadcrumb. It runs alongside the citation tracking, so when you fix a page you can watch whether your rank in ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini moves in the weeks that follow, and which sources moved it.
\n
\n
Find out what the assistants can read on your store today
\n
Same-day first audit. Across the 40 Shopify stores in our pre-launch cohort in May 2026, 54% of the sources ChatGPT cited on product-recommendation queries were ranked lists. Gemini ran higher, at 67%. Claude ran lower, at 41%.
\n\n
The published record points the same way. When Evertune reviewed the 6,000 most-cited URLs in each of six AI engines this spring, 63% of nearly 400 million citations pointed to listicles. Your product page was almost never the page being quoted. What we measure across the cohort, plus four studies from the past year, says something specific about where a Shopify store earns its AI search visibility. Here are the numbers, and what to do with them.
\n
The numbers at a glance
\n
\n
63% of nearly 400 million citations across six AI engines point to listicles (Evertune, March to April 2026).
\n
Brand mentions predict AI visibility three times better than backlinks: a 0.664 correlation against 0.218 (Ahrefs, 75,000 brands).
\n
Product pages take 6% of cited sources across our 40-store cohort; ranked lists and comparisons take 52% (May 2026).
\n
87% of ChatGPT product questions returned a shopping surface in March 2026, up from 20% or fewer in October 2025 (Evertune).
\n
GPT-5.4 mini names 37% fewer brands than the model it replaced (Evertune, 220,000 prompts, March 2026).
\n
\n
1. Reputation beats backlinks, by three to one
\n
In August 2025, Ahrefs measured which factors predict whether a brand appears in Google's AI Overviews, across a sample of 75,000 brands. The strongest predictor was not backlinks, the currency two decades of SEO was built on. It was brand web mentions, at a correlation of 0.664. Backlinks came in at 0.218. On this scale, 0 means no relationship and 1 means the two move in lockstep.
\n
The top three predictors in the study all sit off your site: brand web mentions, branded anchor text and brand search volume.
\n
Correlation with AI Overviews visibility, 0 to 1.
\n
Source: Ahrefs, "An analysis of AI Overview brand visibility factors", 75,000 brands, August 2025.
\n
Evertune's Q1 2026 prompt research points the same way. Across 108,000 prompts on ChatGPT and Google AI Mode, 32% of all cited domains were earned media. That means publications writing about brands, not brands writing about themselves. In some topics the share reached 87%.
\n
It matches what we watch across the cohort. Across the 40 Shopify stores in our pre-launch cohort, ChatGPT cited the same six third-party sources in roughly 70% of product-recommendation queries. Two of the six were subreddits.
\n
The conclusion reads plainly: the pages that decide whether an assistant recommends your store are mostly pages you don't own. We covered the mechanism in how AI assistants pick which Shopify store to recommend; these studies put measured weights on it.
\n
It also explains why syndicating your catalogue into AI shopping surfaces doesn't move these numbers: a feed carries the pages you own, and the three strongest predictors here live on pages you don't. That gap is the subject of Shopify gets your products into AI, getting picked is a different job.
\n
2. What the engines quote: reviews and lists, not product pages
\n
Where do the citations point when a shopper asks what to buy? Here is May 2026 across our cohort, with ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini combined:
\n
Share of cited sources by type, buyer-intent queries, ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini.
\n
Source: CitoRank pre-launch cohort, 40 Shopify stores, May 2026. Method: each store's tracked buyer-intent queries run against ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini repeatedly over the period; every cited URL is classified by source type.
\n
Independent analysis lands in the same region. Omniscient Digital's January 2026 study of 23,387 citations across 240 branded queries put reviews, lists, forums, social media and case studies at 57% of citations, and product and commercial-intent pages at 12%. Our cohort runs even lower on product pages, at 6%.
\n
Those few points still matter, because the product page is where the shopper lands after the answer. It needs accurate prices, live stock and clean product schema; the product-page rebuild guide covers the mechanics. But when ChatGPT recommends a Dometic CFX3 for a van build, the evidence behind it tends to be a ranked list or an r/vandwellers thread. Not Dometic's own listing. The page you own is the destination. The pages you appear on are the evidence.
\n
Evertune's April 2026 study of 40,000 heavily cited URLs describes what the evidence pages look like. The typical one runs 941 words, with four H2 sections, 15 external links and ten images. A 120-word product blurb does not fit that shape. Reviews, comparisons and buying guides do.
\n
3. Listicles carry the answer in every engine
\n
Back to the numbers in the lede. Two in three sources Gemini cited on our cohort's product queries were ranked lists. The published record holds the same shape: across the six engines in Evertune's March and April dataset, 63% of nearly 400 million citations pointed to a listicle. The range ran from roughly 40% in Copilot to 65% in Gemini. And in Evertune's companion sample of 40,000 heavily cited ChatGPT URLs, 58% of cited listicles were ranked. Not "ten great camping fridges". The ten best, in order.
\n
Share of cited sources that were ranked lists, buyer-intent queries, May 2026. No public study breaks out Claude; we query it directly.
\n
Source: CitoRank pre-launch cohort, 40 Shopify stores, May 2026. Industry comparison: Evertune research, March to April 2026.
\n
Two further numbers shape what to do about it. Ranked lists made up 71% to 86% of the cited listicles, depending on the engine. Institutional rankings, the kind compiled by industry bodies, accounted for 1.4% to 4.7%. The lists doing the work are editorial: trade publications, review sites, comparison posts written by people who tested the products. Increasingly they are also videos: YouTube now leads AI Overview citations, and a comparison video is a ranked list with a transcript.
\n
You can't turn your store into a listicle. You can find the ranked lists the engines already trust for "best 12V camping fridge" and earn a place on them. The pitch mechanics, including why the first three positions in a list matter most, are in 85% of your AI visibility lives on sites you don't own. Finding the right lists comes first: an authority audit names the "best of" lists, comparison articles and live AI answers in your category, and shows whether you appear in each one.
\n
4. The answer box is getting smaller
\n
Three shifts measured this year say the window for doing this work is not static.
\n
First, answers name fewer brands. When Evertune tested roughly 220,000 prompts across nine product categories in March 2026, GPT-5.4 mini recommended 37% fewer brands than GPT-5 mini, the model it replaced. Fewer named slots in each answer, and the same number of competitors fighting for them.
\n
Second, ChatGPT is turning product questions into shopping surfaces. In October 2025, 20% or fewer of its product-question responses included a shopping experience. By March 2026, 87% did. Those panels are built from product feeds and structured data, not from prose. The merchants whose data is in shape get the surface.
\n
Third, a measurable share of answers never touches the live web. Evertune's September 2025 research put ChatGPT's reliance on training memory at 62% of answers, and Gemini's at 54%. Memory goes stale. Ask Gemini for the best portable espresso maker under £100 and we've watched it recommend a model that left production 18 months ago. The sources that refresh an engine's view of your category are the same reviews and lists from the studies above.
\n
\n
\n
\n
Engine
\n
Listicle share (Evertune)
\n
Answers leaning on training memory
\n
Measured shift this year
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
ChatGPT
\n
50%
\n
62%
\n
Shopping surfaces on product questions: 20% to 87% in five months
\n
\n
\n
Gemini
\n
~65%
\n
54%
\n
Highest listicle reliance of the six engines studied
\n
\n
\n
Copilot
\n
~40%
\n
Not published
\n
Lowest listicle reliance of the six engines studied
\n
\n
\n
\n
Sources: Evertune research, September 2025 to April 2026, via Evertune's published statistics and Search Engine Land.
\n
A twenty-minute check to run on your store
\n
The studies above describe averages across millions of citations. Your category has its own answer, and twenty minutes reads you the first draft.
\n
\n
Pick the one query your highest-margin product depends on. Phrase it the way a shopper would type it: "best 12V camping fridge for a van", not your SKU name.
\n
Ask it in ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini. Note two things per answer: which brands get named, and which URLs get cited.
\n
Count how many of the cited URLs you appear on. Not own: appear on. A ranked list that includes you counts. Your own product page, per the data above, mostly won't be there.
\n
\n
Twenty minutes gives you one day's snapshot in one category. It won't tell you when a list drops you in week three. It won't show which new Reddit thread started feeding ChatGPT a different answer for your most valuable query. That part needs an instrument rather than an afternoon.
\n
CitoRank runs the same check across ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini for every keyword you track, and names the sources behind each answer. See how the audit works, or compare plans.
\n
\n
FAQ
\n
How do I get my Shopify store recommended by ChatGPT?
\n
Be present on the sources ChatGPT already cites. Across our cohort, ranked lists, review platforms and forum threads took 83% of cited sources on buyer-intent queries. So earn places on the lists, collect reviews on Trustpilot, and answer the threads in your category's subreddit. Submit your product feed so shopping surfaces can show your products. Then watch your queries to see which source moves your rank. The work some call AEO, or generative engine optimisation, compresses to that. CitoRank automates the watching; compare plans.
\n
Do AI assistants cite Shopify product pages at all?
\n
Rarely as evidence. Across our 40-store pre-launch cohort in May 2026, product pages took 6% of cited sources on buyer-intent queries. Omniscient Digital's January 2026 analysis of 23,387 citations put product and commercial pages at 12%, against 57% for reviews, lists, forums, social media and case studies. Your product page is the destination after the answer, so it still needs accurate prices, stock and product schema. The citation work mostly happens elsewhere: in the reviews and ranked lists the engines quote.
\n
Do backlinks still matter for AI visibility?
\n
They matter less than mentions, by roughly three to one. Ahrefs' August 2025 study of 75,000 brands found brand web mentions correlate with AI Overviews visibility at 0.664, against 0.218 for backlinks. Links still feed the organic rankings most engines retrieve from, so they aren't worthless. If you have one hour to spend this week, the data says spend it earning a named mention, not a link.
\n
Which AI assistant cites listicles most?
\n
Gemini, in both datasets we can compare. Across our 40-store cohort in May 2026, 67% of the sources Gemini cited on buyer-intent queries were ranked lists, against 54% for ChatGPT and 41% for Claude. The published record agrees on the ordering: Evertune's March to April 2026 review of six engines runs from roughly 40% in Copilot to 65% in Gemini. Across all six combined, 63% of nearly 400 million citations pointed to a listicle.
\n
What does it mean when an AI assistant cites a source?
\n
A citation is the assistant naming or linking the page it drew an answer from. When ChatGPT answers "best leisure battery for a campervan" and links a ranked list, that list received a citation, and the brands on it received recommendations. CitoRank counts both: whether your store is named in the answer, and which sources fed it. The two move separately, and the second usually explains the first.
\n
Does product schema still matter for AI search?
\n
Yes, for a different job. Schema and product feeds supply the shopping surfaces ChatGPT attached to 87% of product questions by March 2026. They also make your pages extractable when an engine reads them. What schema won't do on its own is earn citations. In Cyrus Shepard's May 2026 synthesis of 54 studies, structured data scored 5.6 out of 10 as a citation factor. Reputation earns the citation. Schema makes you usable once you're in the room.
\n
Why isn't Claude in the public citation studies?
\n
The Evertune URL studies cover ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode. Claude isn't broken out, and Anthropic publishes no equivalent citation dataset. That gap is why our charts include it and the public ones don't. CitoRank asks ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini your tracked buyer queries directly, so your Claude rank comes from observed answers rather than extrapolation from other engines.
\n
How do I find the listicles AI already trusts in my category?
\n
Ask the assistants your buyer query and note every URL they cite. Repeat it across a week and the same lists keep appearing. Across the 40 Shopify stores in our pre-launch cohort, six sources covered roughly 70% of ChatGPT's product-recommendation citations per category. An authority audit automates the discovery: it names the "best of" lists, comparison articles and live AI answers in your category, and shows which ones include you.
\n
\n
See how your store ranks in ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini
\n
Same-day first audit. A citation, throughout this post, means the source an assistant names behind its answer. Each brand mention in each answer was classified by its citation: first-party (the brand's own domain), third-party (someone else's domain) or uncited. The result is the 6.5-to-1 ratio: a brand is 6.5 times more likely to be mentioned via someone else's page than via its own.
\n
One caveat before you act on it. The study ran on software categories: CRM tools, HR platforms, marketing software. Nobody asked GPT-5 about camping fridges. But the mechanism is what transfers, and it matches what we log in our cohort's retail categories. The recommendation forms on third-party pages. Your own site gets consulted for the details.
\n
The first-party slice makes that split visible. Among brand-domain citations in the AirOps data, product pages carried 19.3% and homepages 7.1%. The models reach for your own pages when the question shifts from "who should I consider" to "show me the details": price, dimensions, compatibility, stock. Your product page is the verification layer. The discovery layer is elsewhere.
\n
The split also differs by model. Claude and Perplexity cited brand-owned pages most, between 13% and 21% of mentions depending on category. GPT-5 cited them least, between 4% and 11%. If your category's buyers lean on ChatGPT, your own domain is doing even less of the work than the headline number suggests.
\n
Nine in ten third-party mentions are listicles, comparisons or reviews
\n
The third-party share is not spread evenly across the web. In the AirOps data, nearly 90% of third-party mentions came from three formats: listicles, comparison articles and reviews. The "best of" round-up is not one channel among many. It is the channel.
\n
Placement inside those articles matters almost as much as inclusion. 80% of the brands mentioned by the models appeared among the first three names discussed in the cited article. The models lift from the top of the piece. A passing mention as the eighth entry in a round-up rarely makes it into an answer.
\n
For a Shopify merchant the format list translates directly. The Wirecutter guide and the Outdoorsmagic group test for your category. The "[product] vs [competitor]" comparison posts. And the review platforms: Promptwatch's late-2025 tracking puts Trustpilot fifth among ChatGPT's most-cited domains.
\n
Review text deserves more attention than review scores here, because the models quote text. "Kept food frozen for 48 hours off a 100Ah leisure battery" hands an assistant a fact it can lift into an answer. "Great fridge, fast delivery" hands it nothing. When you ask buyers for a Trustpilot review, ask them to name the product and what they used it for.
\n
Each assistant reads a different web
\n
The first mistake the data punishes is relying on your own site. The second is treating the assistants as one channel. Profound's analysis of 30 million citations, logged between August 2024 and June 2025, shows three assistants leaning on three different webs:
\n
\n
\n
\n
Assistant
\n
Most-cited domain
\n
Share of top citations
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
ChatGPT
\n
Wikipedia
\n
47.9%
\n
\n
\n
Google AI Overviews
\n
Reddit
\n
21%
\n
\n
\n
Perplexity
\n
Reddit
\n
46.7%
\n
\n
\n
\n
Source: Profound, 30 million citations across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Perplexity, August 2024 to June 2025, as reported by Search Engine Roundtable.
\n
The runners-up tell the same story differently per engine. Reddit took 11.3% of ChatGPT's top citations in the same dataset. Wikipedia, ChatGPT's number one, managed only 5.7% in Google AI Overviews, where YouTube ran close behind Reddit.
\n
Semrush's later 13-week study (230,000 prompts, weekly snapshots from July to October 2025) adds two patterns worth knowing. LinkedIn rose across every platform it tracked, and Google's AI Mode cited it in nearly 15% of responses. And AI Mode's top domains were almost all properties Google owns or partners with: LinkedIn, YouTube, Reddit, Google's own sites.
\n
The overlap between assistants is smaller than most merchants expect. In the AirOps data, 68% of brands were mentioned by only one of the three platforms tested. Within a single model, between 37% and 52% of the brands it mentioned appeared nowhere else. Being the default answer in Perplexity tells you nothing about ChatGPT. Testing one assistant tells you about that assistant. For the per-engine detail, including which source formats each one favours, see what ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini cite when shoppers ask what to buy.
\n
Mentions beat backlinks, on the numbers
\n
The strongest public evidence on what correlates with AI visibility comes from Ahrefs' study of 75,000 brands in Google AI Overviews. Branded web mentions, linked or unlinked, correlate at 0.664. Backlinks correlate at 0.218. Domain Rating sits between them at 0.326. The top three factors in the whole study are all off-site signals.
\n
The distribution behind those coefficients is steep. Brands in the top quartile for web mentions earned a median of 169 AI Overview mentions. The next quartile down: 14. The bottom half of brands: between zero and three. Of the 75,000 brands studied, 26% never appeared in an AI Overview at all. If your brand sits in the lower half of web mentions for its category, the assistants barely know you exist.
\n
Seer Interactive found the same shape for ChatGPT: backlinks correlated at 0.10 and domain rank at 0.25, while Google organic keywords correlated at 0.65. Your Google footprint still feeds the retrieval layer, which is why the on-store work in how AI assistants pick which Shopify store to recommend still applies. But past that baseline, the marginal hour goes further earning one named mention in a ranked round-up than acquiring one more link. Ahrefs' Ryan Law has made the mechanism explicit: unlinked mentions do little for classic SEO and a lot for AI visibility. Language models build their picture of a brand from words on pages, not from the link graph.
\n
The source mix is not stable
\n
Whatever mix of sources feeds your category's answers today, it can be repriced without notice. Semrush's weekly tracking caught this happening. In early August 2025, ChatGPT cited Reddit in close to 60% of responses. By mid-September it was roughly 10%. Wikipedia fell from about 55% of responses to under 20% in the same window. Nothing comparable happened on AI Mode or Perplexity.
\n
The cause is unconfirmed. Google removed its num=100 search parameter in mid-September, and the timing fits. Semrush's head of organic and AI visibility reads it as deliberate rebalancing by OpenAI to stop over-citing a handful of domains. Either way, the weighting moved roughly six-fold inside six weeks, on one platform, with no announcement. Reddit and Wikipedia stayed ChatGPT's two most-cited domains, but Medium, Forbes and LinkedIn closed the gap.
\n
That is the operational risk in the 85%. A merchant whose category answer leaned on two subreddits, as the cohort pattern suggests many do, would have watched that channel shrink six-fold over six weeks. The merchants who noticed were the ones measuring weekly. Everyone else found out whenever they next thought to ask ChatGPT about their own category.
\n
What to do on your store this month
\n
The four-week on-store sequence covers speed, schema and product feeds. This is the off-store half, one action per finding:
\n
\n
Log your category's real source list. Write down the 10 buyer-intent queries that matter for your store (the questions a shopper asks an assistant when they're close to buying). Ask ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini each one, and record every source cited. That URL list, not your competitor's homepage, is what you're competing with.
\n
Pitch one ranked round-up. If a listicle the assistants keep citing should include your product and doesn't, contact the writer. Offer one checkable fact: a price the article's range misses, a spec the listed products lack, a test result. 80% of cited brands sit in the first three names, so one strong placement beats five passing mentions.
\n
Ask your last 50 buyers for a specific Trustpilot review. Name the product, name the use. The text is what gets quoted, not the star count.
\n
Spend 30 minutes a week in your category's subreddit. r/vandwellers, r/espresso, r/SkincareAddiction, whichever fits your products. Answer questions under your own name. Two of the 6 sources doing 70% of the work in our cohort are subreddits.
\n
Re-run your 10 queries at the end of the month and diff the source lists. September 2025 proved the mix can move six-fold in six weeks. If logging 30 query-runs a month by hand doesn't appeal, that is the job CitoRank does for you.
\n
\n
If your catalogue is already syndicated into AI shopping surfaces, note that none of the five actions above are things a product feed can do for you - Shopify gets your products into AI, getting picked is a different job covers where that line falls.
\n
CitoRank runs your category's buyer-intent queries against ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini, and names every source behind every answer. When a platform like Reddit gets repriced, you see the shift that week. See how the audit runs or compare plans.
\n
\n
FAQ
\n
How much of your AI visibility comes from your own website?
\n
About 13% in the broadest public test. AirOps classified 21,311 brand mentions across GPT-5, Claude Sonnet 4.5 and Perplexity Sonar in October 2025: 85% were attributed to third-party sources, 13.2% to the brand's own domain. The third-party share concentrates in listicles, comparison articles and reviews, which carried roughly nine in ten of those mentions. Your own product page matters most when the shopper asks for specifics: price, dimensions, stock.
\n
Do backlinks still matter for AI visibility?
\n
As a baseline, yes. As the lever, no. Ahrefs measured backlinks at a 0.218 correlation with AI Overview brand visibility across 75,000 brands, against 0.664 for branded web mentions. Domain Rating sits at 0.326, enough to keep your store crawled and in the candidate set. Past that baseline, an unlinked named mention in a ranked "best of" article does more for AI visibility than one more acquired link.
\n
Which sources does ChatGPT cite most?
\n
Wikipedia led Profound's analysis of 30 million citations from August 2024 to June 2025, at 47.9% of ChatGPT's top citations, with Reddit at 11.3%. The mix then moved sharply in September 2025: Semrush's weekly tracking shows Reddit falling from roughly 60% of ChatGPT responses to about 10%, and Wikipedia from 55% to under 20%. Both remain ChatGPT's two most-cited domains, with Medium, Forbes and LinkedIn closing the gap.
\n
Why did ChatGPT cut Reddit citations in September 2025?
\n
Unconfirmed. Google removed its num=100 search parameter in mid-September 2025, which limited access to results beyond the first page, and the timing fits. Semrush's head of organic and AI visibility reads it differently: deliberate rebalancing by OpenAI to stop over-citing a handful of domains. What's verifiable is the size and speed of the move: a roughly six-fold drop inside six weeks, isolated to ChatGPT, while AI Mode and Perplexity held steady.
\n
Does my Shopify store need a Wikipedia page?
\n
For most stores, no, and that's fine. Wikipedia's notability bar excludes most independent stores, and chasing it costs weeks you can spend elsewhere. The sources you can influence are the ones carrying nine in ten third-party mentions: category listicles, comparison articles, Trustpilot reviews and the subreddit where your buyers ask questions. A named mention in one ranked round-up beats an unwinnable Wikipedia fight.
\n
How do I get my product into "best of" articles?
\n
Find the round-ups the assistants cite for your category queries. Then pitch the writer something checkable: a price point the article's range misses, a test result, a spec the listed products lack. Placement matters nearly as much as inclusion. In AirOps' data, 80% of brands mentioned appeared among the first three names in the cited article. One placement near the top of a ranked piece beats several passing mentions further down.
\n
Does CitoRank show which sources cite my store?
\n
Yes. Every keyword you track runs against ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini, and the dashboard lists each source behind each answer alongside your per-model rank. When a platform gets repriced, as Reddit was on ChatGPT in September 2025, you see your category's source mix shift that week rather than finding out a quarter later.
\n
\n
See which sources ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini cite in your category
\n
Same-day first audit. The numbers it surfaced are uncomfortable for anyone running a Shopify store.
\n\n
ChatGPT generates 24% of its answers without fetching a single web page. Gemini generates 34% the same way. When Gemini does ground itself in real sources, it provides no clickable citation in 92% of its replies. Perplexity reads about ten pages per query and credits three or four.
\n
The mechanism a shopper now uses to find "the best portable espresso machine under $400" is mostly a black box. Your store either gets recommended, or it doesn't, and you rarely see why.
\n
What decides whether ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini surfaces your product? After running repeated citation audits across the forty Shopify stores in our pre-launch cohort, the answer compresses neatly into five things. Five levers you can move this quarter.
\n
\n
\n
\n
LLM
\n
Answers with no web fetch
\n
Clickable citation provided
\n
Pages read per query
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
ChatGPT (GPT-4o)
\n
24%
\n
Yes, in most grounded responses
\n
3 to 6
\n
\n
\n
Gemini
\n
34%
\n
No, in 92% of answers
\n
5 to 12
\n
\n
\n
Perplexity Sonar
\n
Low
\n
Yes
\n
10 read, 3 to 4 cited
\n
\n
\n
\n
Source: SSRC AI Disclosures Project, "The Attribution Crisis in LLM Search Results" (Strauss et al., 2025). Based on roughly 14,000 LMArena conversation logs.
\n
1. Whether you're in the candidate pool at all
\n
Before any model can quote your page, it has to find your page. That sounds obvious. It isn't.
\n
A live AI search runs on a tight latency budget. The model fans the prompt out into a handful of search queries, retrieves a small candidate set, then picks two to six pages to read. If your server takes more than a second to respond, you're often discarded before the candidate set is built. If your page is rendered entirely in client-side JavaScript with no server-rendered fallback, you're invisible to many of the lightweight crawlers.
\n
The fixes are unsexy:
\n
\n
Get your store's time-to-first-byte under 200ms. Cloudflare in front of Shopify is usually enough.
\n
Write meta titles and descriptions in the language of the prompt, not the language of the SKU. "Best 12V camping fridge for vans" beats "Dometic CFX3 35-litre cooler".
\n
Submit your product feed to ChatGPT's merchant program at chatgpt.com/merchants. It accepts CSV, XML, or JSON, refreshes every 15 minutes, costs nothing, and bypasses normal retrieval for transactional shopping queries.
\n
Fill every attribute slot on each product. OpenAI's published feed spec rewards listings with more populated fields. A listing with 15 populated attributes outranks one with 5 on the same query.
\n
\n
The merchant who treats this as "ordinary technical SEO" wins half the citation game before the model has even decided what to cite.
\n
2. Whether your page is the one the model decides to quote
\n
Being in the candidate pool gets you considered. Being structured gets you cited.
\n
Models extract specific passages from the pages they read. A clean H1, semantic H2 and H3 headings, an ordered list of features, a comparison table, a clearly labelled FAQ section. These aren't aesthetic choices. They're the units a model uses to lift a quote.
\n
Three specifics that move the needle for a Shopify product page:
\n
\n
Use a real FAQ section, marked up with FAQPage schema. Phrase the questions as a customer would type them: "How long does an Alpicool C20 last on a 100Ah leisure battery?" not "Battery duration estimate." The schema markup makes the question-and-answer pair extractable as a unit.
\n
Add a comparison table. When a shopper asks "best portable espresso machine under $400," a model is far more likely to cite the page that contains a table with brand, price, brew pressure, and weight than the page that describes the same data in prose. Tables compress decisions, and AI assistants reward compression.
\n
Update the page within the last three months. Industry analysis of ChatGPT's citation behaviour shows pages updated in the last three months outperform older pages across every query intent. A
dateModified
JSON-LD property gives the model an explicit handle to verify freshness.
\n
\n
Structure plus freshness is the difference between "your page was read" and "your page was the one the model decided to quote." The full page-mechanics guide, with the rendering and extraction evidence, is in what an AI assistant can read on your product page.
\n
3. Whether third parties back you up
\n
The single most consistent observation from our pre-launch audits: across the forty Shopify stores we tracked, ChatGPT cited the same six third-party sources in roughly 70% of all product-recommendation queries in their category. Two of those six were subreddits.
\n
AI assistants weight independent validation far more heavily than self-promotion, and the weighting increases as the query gets closer to a purchase decision. Industry analysis of brand mentions in high-intent prompts has found that around 85% of citations come from third-party sources rather than from the brand's own site. The full map of where those mentions live, platform by platform, is in 85% of your AI visibility lives on sites you don't own.
\n
For a Shopify merchant, this means the citation work that pays off most usually doesn't happen on your store. It happens on:
\n
\n
Reddit. YouTube and Reddit are consistently in the top three cited domains across ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini. Find the subreddit that matches your category: r/vandwellers for outdoor power, r/espresso for kitchen, r/SkincareAddiction for beauty. Earn a mention by being useful, not by being promotional.
\n
Trustpilot and category review sites. A populated Trustpilot profile with recent reviews is one of the most reliably cited sources we've watched.
\n
Comparison and "best of" articles in trade publications. Wirecutter, Outdoorsmagic, Camping Magazine, GQ, Allure, depending on your vertical. One mention in a piece that already ranks top-five organic typically beats fifty mentions on lower-authority domains.
\n
\n
Your organic Google ranking still matters here too, because most LLMs use a web search as their retrieval layer. Pages ranking in Google's top 10 for the fan-out variations of a query show a roughly 0.65 correlation with LLM mentions for the same topic. The instrument changed, but a chunk of the same plumbing still runs underneath.
\n
4. Whether the shopper trusts what they read
\n
Traditional Google delivers ten blue links and lets the shopper choose. AI search delivers one answer and asks the shopper to act. The trust threshold is higher because the alternative, a list of competing sources, is gone.
\n
Two patterns show up consistently in citation behaviour.
\n
First, model output that names a specific reviewer, certification, or third-party test (Which?, ANSI, Wirecutter's "best of 2026") converts to clicks at a noticeably higher rate than output that names only the brand. When the assistant says "the Outwell awning recommended by Outdoorsmagic," the shopper is being given a second-order endorsement that justifies the click.
\n
Second, the presence of user-generated commentary changes click behaviour after the answer appears. When Google's AI Overviews surface, downstream clicks on Reddit and YouTube grow from roughly 18% to 30% of all clicks. Shoppers validate the synthetic answer against human experience before they trust it enough to buy.
\n
The practical implication for a Shopify merchant is two-pronged. On your store: surface real proof prominently. Customer logos, named third-party test results, certifications, author credentials on any guides you publish. Off your store: be present where the validation happens. Encourage real reviews on Trustpilot. Answer threads in your category subreddit under your own name. Sponsor or earn a review on a YouTube channel with real viewer overlap with your buyers; YouTube is the strongest single predictor of AI visibility yet measured.
\n
Trust is a slow signal. It compounds.
\n
5. Whether you'd notice if you started slipping
\n
The first four levers are things you do. The fifth is the instrument you do them with.
\n
A measurable share of AI search behaviour is invisible from your Shopify analytics. A shopper asks ChatGPT for a recommendation, the model recommends a competitor, the shopper goes directly to that competitor's site. No referrer. No event. No way to know it happened.
\n
Without ongoing monitoring, you don't know whether your rank in Claude shifted from #2 to #5 last week, whether a new Reddit thread is now feeding ChatGPT a different answer to the query your highest-margin product depends on, or whether Gemini still cites a product you discontinued two years ago. The three engines don't move together either; what ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini cite breaks down how differently each one sources its answers.
\n
A citation audit is what closes the loop. Per LLM, per buyer-intent query, per source. You see the rank, the citing source list, and the exact passage the model used. When the number drops, you can trace the drop to the specific thread or article that caused it.
\n
The other four levers don't compound unless you can see what they're doing. This is the part that doesn't exist as "ordinary SEO". There is no equivalent of Google Search Console for ChatGPT, no equivalent of Ahrefs for Claude. The category is new enough that the instrument is the work.
\n
What we'd do on a store like yours this month
\n
If you have a single afternoon a week for the next four weeks, here's the sequence we'd run on a store like yours:
\n
\n
Week 1: cut server response time to under 200ms. Put Cloudflare in front of Shopify if you haven't already. Verify with webpagetest.org or Google's PageSpeed Insights.
\n
Week 2: rewrite the meta title and FAQ on your three highest-revenue product pages. Use the language a shopper would type into ChatGPT, not the language of your SKU.
\n
Week 2 (parallel): submit your product feed. Go to chatgpt.com/merchants, fill in the application, send the feed. Takes about twenty minutes.
\n
Week 3: earn one specific third-party mention in your category. A genuinely useful Reddit reply, a Trustpilot review request to your last 100 buyers, or a pitch to one trade-publication writer with a real angle.
\n
Week 4: run a baseline citation audit. So you can measure what any of the above did.
\n
\n
Four weeks. Five concrete things. Each one verifiable.
\n
CitoRank tracks citation rank across ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini for your Shopify store, names the sources feeding each answer, and shows the exact passage the model used. See how the audit runs or compare plans.
\n
\n
FAQ
\n
How is getting cited by AI different from regular Google SEO?
\n
Most of the underlying signals overlap: fast pages, useful content, third-party validation. The differences sit at the edges. AI assistants extract passages rather than rank pages, weight third-party mentions more heavily than direct visits, and surface one answer instead of ten. A page that ranks #2 on Google for a buyer-intent query may not be cited at all by Claude, and the reverse is equally common.
\n
Should I submit a product feed to ChatGPT's merchants program?
\n
Yes, if you sell physical products with stable inventory. The program at chatgpt.com/merchants is free, accepts CSV, TSV, XML, or JSON, refreshes every 15 minutes, and bypasses normal retrieval for transactional shopping queries. Populate every attribute field you have data for. Listings with 15 populated fields outrank listings with 5 on the same query.
\n
Why does Reddit get cited so often by AI assistants?
\n
AI assistants treat threads on dedicated subreddits (r/espresso, r/vandwellers, r/SkincareAddiction) as high-trust experiential validation. The combination of named authors, real timestamps, voted-on answers, and category-specific moderators reads to a model as third-party endorsement that's hard to fake. Across our pre-launch cohort, Reddit appeared in roughly half of cited sources for high-intent product queries.
\n
How often should I update product pages to stay cited?
\n
Analysis of ChatGPT's citation behaviour shows pages updated within the last three months outperform older pages across every query intent. Add a visible dateModified JSON-LD property so the model can verify freshness. A quarterly review of your top 20 revenue-driving pages, refreshing prices, FAQs, and any factual claims, is the most efficient cadence we've seen.
\n
Does CitoRank track Claude, ChatGPT, and Gemini separately?
\n
Yes. Every keyword you track is queried against all three LLMs. Your dashboard shows per-LLM rank for each keyword, tracked over time. If your store is cited #1 in Claude but absent from Gemini for the same query, you see the split immediately, plus the source list each model used to build its answer.
\n
\n
See how your store ranks in ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini
\n
Same-day first audit.
